The PKK runs the Mahsum Korkmaz Academy in the Be kaa Valley, a guerrilla training base operated under Syrian protection. From the Mahsum Kork maz Academy, the PKK carries on a guerrilla war against Turkey. Syrias intere st in supporting the PKK is not one of kindness towards a minority group that i s repressed by the Turkish government. In fact, Syria uses its Kurdish card as leverage ag ainst Turkeys control of fresh water from such rivers as the Euphrates that fl ow from Turkey into Syria.
